@SameSuperLeopard: i really appreciate that and @tedioussparrow and @manifest you guys are all too kind. ill definitely be fine, and much more tan in austin than i wouldve been in chicago so theres that.
Right, I do plan on working my ass off 1L. I just also recently heard that pre-OCI is this new secret thing that elevates some people and screws some people over, and I got worried about that.
But you're saying that's not really something to worry about, so I'll just focus on 1L.
tbh seasonal depression is so real and something im genuinely worried about screwing up my grades if i get off a WL and go to school in the north
that's a reasonable fear
12:31
Austin > Chicago
Also if you end up in a dreary midwest locale, start taking vitamin D supplements
Lol thats why i applied to nevada and arizona. But im still just sending it thru seasonal depression
12:31
What’s the secret for pre-OCI I assumed I’d learn that in 1L
Temple Law doesnt have any windows either

lolol i am getting married to a chicago man so ill have to eventually deal but for now i can enjoy the sunshine

ahhh well i have been talking to a lot of lawyers lately. And it might not be a bad thing for you to do. Not even necessarily for networking purposes but to hear this sorta stuff right out of the horses mouth. and it's also not bad practice for networking. the lawyer i spoke to today is some guy who came and spoke once to my class in undergrad TWO YEARS AGO! I just emailed him out of the blue and said like "loved your talk it really resonated with me. i start law school soon, if you have anytime to talk to a young aspiring lawyer, i'd really appreciate it." and he agreed and just zoomed with me for 30 minutes telling me some of this stuff and giving me advice. I just find it comforting to learn a little bit more about what we're going into.
12:33
and at the end he was like "keep in touch i may not be in your desire field, but if you stick to this path there are people i know that are that i can connect you with"
My introvert battery is going to be absolutely dead for the entirety of law school
Bc when I network, I NETWORK
But hopefully I get this apartment so I can afford to live alone
Idrk what networking is
12:34
dude. trust me. this was so far outside my comfort zone. but it was reassuring how willing he was and how open he was. and the fact that he offered that in the end. I think it's going to make it easier for me to do it again the next time.
12:34
Same lmao networking is just a game tho and a lot can be done online which will help me introvert through the extroverted grind
i would rather pull my teeth out and eat em than go to a networking event
12:35
something i try to remind myself is that the worst they can say is no. like when i emailed him out of the blue he could have just been like, "hey i'm sorry i'm really busy being a MF lawyer (lol) so i don't think i have time. but best of luck to you"

I got a soft job offer from an alumni at a school i toured because her firm is looking to expand into the area of law i want to practice. It's crazy how much "who you know" applies to law. Talk to everyone, worst thing that happens is a few wasted minutes
12:35
Honestly one of the big reasons I’m not R&Ring is I have talked with four lawyers and all of them said to just go and try for a transfer if I don’t like where I end up
networking is overrated, im great at it but if i'm being real its just for us to feel good about ourselves talking and making connections - it rarely helps with anything moving forward lol
Im not really even introverted. Networking events jist feel forced and awkward tho
FlutteringSqueamishPuffin
12:36
^yeah you gotta meet them individually in my opinion
12:36
I’ve never done networking “events” all of mine has just been people I’ve met organically
12:37
@WhatDoIHaveToLose: tell that to my friend with a 3.3 at Fordham Law who got a job at Kirkland and Ellis off a guy he met at a bar and kept in touch with. He literally got turned down for the job and emailed the guy to thank him for putting in a good word. and the guy was like "give me an hour"and then the firm called and offered him the position.
12:37
I think the networking events will just be to get the initial contact info of people and make a first impression to then follow up for coffee or something
