I had a friend pick Berkeley over UChicago, and many here would say that was a terrible decision. Maybe it was, by outcome stats alone. But they wanted to do PI and they did not want to spend 3 (more) years freezing their tail off in the dark from 5 pm on

Yeah, the car thing is totally reasonable - it's basically an extra $6,000 a year cost of attendance plus whatever $ value you place on not having to drive
