In this federal antitrust challenge, Tanaka, a former collegiate soccer player, is contesting a rule that discourages student-athletes from transferring during their collegiate careers. Tanaka claims that the rule was enforced against her in retaliation for her involvement in an investigation into academic fraud and violates the Sherman Act. The district court dismissed Tanaka's complaint, stating that the rule was noncommercial and likely not unreasonable under the Sherman Act, and also declined to hear the state contract claim. However, the lower court erred in accepting Tanaka's inadequate market definitions and claims regarding the impact of the transfer rule.
