ohh gotcha. so race and ethnicity then, but not generally sexuality or disability status?
UncleMacisBack
15:36
Most law school students are ugly hot should get a urm boost
LinskysMom
15:36
PLSSSSS. shut up thats so funny. no but i wasnt sure if URM meant specifically in relation to race/ethnicity or also other underrepresented identity categories, if that makes sense

No sexuality is a very soft bonus but does not count towards urm boost. If you can write convincingly about it then it might help a little. Disability is weird because it is supposed to help but in many ways schools will discriminate against you. It does not fall under URM boost umbrella which is a very specific tiered system where you can get medium to huge boosts depending
Yeah I avoided discussing my disability like the plague
they can deal with that shit once I get there
LinskysMom
15:37
wait does disability rly discriminate against you!! how so? (15/15)

i'm URM (PAWG)
I mean, they can't LITERALLY choose not to admit you because of a disability. But things like autism / bipolar / schizophrenia (the "less acceptable" neurodivergences) and physical disabilities / chronic illnesses can cast doubt on an applicant's capacity. They might see it positively, but it just takes one subconsciously discriminatory adcom to view your entire app in a negative light

@babybunny is can confirm
Just not a risk I'm willing to take
Is being a very high ranking league of legends player an acceptable disability?
LinskysMom
15:42
oooo gotcha ok. i wrote my PS on having a temporary disability post-stroke and tying that to legal stuff but didnt mention being autistic so i dont think it clotheslined me. but i will think abt that more carefully if i R&R
UncleMacisBack
15:42
I also think people do a poor job describing how they overcome/cope w their disability so it can just come off as complaining or sob story

Adcoms will never admit to discriminating against the disabled. But if you have a mental illness for example there have been meta analyses done that show that it is the kiss of death for an app. Depending on the disability they might be worried about you finishing law school and discriminate against you for that because at the end of the day it’s a numbers game for graduation and employment after graduation so you can lose points for that. Depending on how the individual adcoms feel something like blindness or paraplegia could help or hurt based on kind of arbitrary feelings. It’s very complicated and I do not envy our disabled brothers and sisters. The system is very ableist
^ what mac said i know the joke is like " racking my brain to think of something so i can trauma dump for a personal statement" but i think a lot of adcoms actually are not. a big fan of it especially for disabilities
LinskysMom
15:44
i did have people review my PS to make sure it wasn't woe-is-me like that and i dont think it was which is great!! i worked super hard to make sure it was true to why it inspired me to pursue law without just being trauma dumping, and i actually think it boosted my app bc i applied late and have a 168 but got waitlisted at some good schools rather than rejected
15:45
Law schools do not like to take risks, and a disability or a form of neurodivergence that could keep you from doing well, graduating on time, etc. if things go wrong is a risk

can washu wake up
15:46
The most charitable reading of it is "nothing against people with ____ personally, we just don't want to risk a hit to our graduation rate/employment stats"
shereallysaidmeganslaw
15:46
yes reddit seems to be down
UncleMacisBack
15:46
@babybunny as your spouse that’s concerning
15:46
Damn right in the middle of my DM conversation big sadge
15:46
(No school will ever say this out loud or put it in writing, for obvious reasons)

okay thank u all for the feedback that super helps!! i do think it was fine this time bc i didnt allude to having a permanent disability, but i will be cautious in my next cycle (if R&R) to not do that also lol. but y'all are seriously so helpful
