Definition of maritima Angliae
Maritima Angliae
Maritima Angliae is a Latin term that refers to two things:
- The seacoast of England
- The Crown's sea revenue, which includes income from things like wreckage, whales, or sturgeons that wash ashore
For example, if a shipwreck occurred on the coast of England, any valuable items that washed ashore would be considered part of the Maritima Angliae and would belong to the Crown. Similarly, if a whale or sturgeon washed ashore, the Crown would have the right to collect any revenue from the sale of its parts.
Historically, this revenue was collected by sheriffs and later by the Lord High Admiral.
