15:46
yes texas has the biggest market for oil and gas in the country
15:47
so there's a bit of selection bias there i think
pug
15:47
gotcha so that isnt necessarily a product of going to UT, but rather a product of wanting to work in say, Houston
15:47
right
15:47
Genuinely curious as to why people private their profiles?
west coast cities are just especially bad for walkability and public transit and thats all ive experienced

15:47
This is all very important discussion but what about USC guys?
15:47
@CondemnedPuffyGnome: That and the stuff we do build tends to be one-off and overengineered, California high speed rail would be half as much over budget if they embraced the efficiency of taking one blueprint for an overpass/bridge and printing 1,000 of it along the route
@Ijustwannagetinman: can i ask what your stats are? no worries if you don't want to share
Wait is this not the same as the Nu e wave like an hour ago?!
pug
15:47
@chag would you believe their career office for saying they can place outside texas if a student so wishes?
@LateScandalousCaterpillar: thats what im trying to figure out
pug
15:48
im worried im about to catch a WL lol if NU is trickling. it must be if tinman just got theWL
someone recently said they just got their WL email though
15:48
@Pug: I applied to UT coming from NY if thats worth anyting. I feel like it could travel
@tarzacc: where are you leaning?
15:49
UT actually has the largest energy law and i believe one of the largest environmental law programs in the country because of the oil connections. also yeah i think something like 30% of UT's class place outside of texas
random but does anyone in here wear a whoop?
pug
15:49
i suppose they must place well in NYC for students who want that. i must just be psyching myself out. this whole thing is so stressful sometimes i just want to fly back out to california and lie down in the sand in malibu and die
@jb2028: I love CAHSR but it suffers so much from: slow trickle of money; tons of nimby/ceqa bullshit challenges; and lack of anyone knowing how to build shit here.
pug
15:49
ive been feeling quite existential lol
at least they are actually trying to build real international standard HSR and not some stupid hydrogen-fueled thing
pug
15:50
@chag ok that makes me feel better. im hearing a lot of opinions from UT haters telling me i have to work in oil and gas transactions loll
eggbagel
15:50
is anyone else having crippling fear that theyre making the wrong decision or is it just me
15:50
BC A!
15:50
...and they want a $1000 depopsit in like 3 days
pug
15:50
egg every day. EVERY DAY.
15:51
If anyone cares to learn more than they ever wanted to know about NYC/U.S. transit costs, and also become a crank whose eye twitches every time their local transit agency budgets a new project, I highly recommend Alon Levy's blog https://pedestrianobservations.com/2024/03/04/is-there-room-for-optimism-about-new-york-construction-costs/
15:52
i think its important though to remember when looking at the career outcomes of schools like UT that people from UT place so well in texas *because* they want to work in texas. as long as you do a good job of building your resume out in school and taking advantage of all your opportunities, you'll be fine no matter where you go
that shit will just piss me off
