I’m super lucky to have a full ride at UVA, and their deposit deadline is 4/25. I also got 65% at Duke, and their deposit deadline is 4/26. I really, really want to go to Duke, so I sent a scholarship negotiation. Duke got back to me and told me that I’m under consideration for one of Duke’s full rides IF one opens up, and they’ll get back to me by 4/24. Here’s the issue—I’m sure that many of Duke’s current full-ride offers will decline on 4/26, which is after UVA deposit deadline and I lose all my leverage. If Duke was nice, they would go ahead and award me the scholarship on 4/26 since they told me that would happen if one opened up, but they have no reason to do that because by that point I’ll lose my leverage. I really need to extend BOTH UVA and Duke deposit deadline, but the odds of them both giving me a few more days is low.

I would need an extension for both--Duke's deposit is on 4/26. It would also look really fishy to email back the scholarship office and say "actually, please DON'T give me my decision on the 24th like you promised."

If you're in active negotiation and waiting for a response, that seems like a good reason to grant you an extension

It's so weird because Duke has been so, so nice and I really think they would be kind to me, but realistically they have no reason to and that's just rose tinted glasses

why would you have to ask duke for an extension? if they offer you a full, it will be before the deadline and you will just deposit asap no?

For all I know, Duke scholarships has reached out to their current full-ride offers and asked if they plan on coming so they can go ahead and award them elsewhere

Yeah, that's how I'm leaning. The odds of getting an extension back from BOTH of them this late is low and looks bad. If they said the 24th, that makes me think they're working something up

Also I'm kinda like...they could have just sent me my new offer on the 24th. I have no idea why they sent me this email yesterday to tease the full-ride if they didn't expect something to change

I don't think there's harm in asking for an extension at UVA by telling them you are up for a full-ride scholarship at Duke but possibly won't know until after UVA's deposit deadline.
