It is used to refer to the modern era. A.D. is the abbreviation for Anno Domini. Another way to say it is "Year of Our Lord."

A more thorough explanation:

Definition: Anno Domini is a Latin phrase that means "in the year of the Lord." It is used to refer to the modern era and the method of calculating time from the birth of Christ. The abbreviation for Anno Domini is A.D. and it is also known as the Year of Our Lord.

1. The Great Wall of China was built in the 7th century A.D.
